Chronicling America presents a March 22, 1867 article, writer unknown, from the Charleston Daily News newspaper that includes a speech made by F. L. Cardozo before a large crowd of African Americans. According to the article, Cardozo reminded the crowd that Black men fought in the war for their freedom and urged them to vote for the party of Lincoln. Cardozo also indicated that freedmen "should use the right of suffrage wisely" because the right could be taken away.
