Note: See 4th column, 3rd paragraph.
Chronicling America features an 1872 New Orleans Republican newspaper article, writer unknown, on the meeting of the Black Southern States Convention of Colored Men. According to the article, Alonzo Ransier - an African American South Carolina Congressman and South Carolina's first Black Lieutenant Governor - called the meeting to discuss the material interests of the Black congressmen. This account also provides the perspective that the sectionalism that developed between the attendees of the semi-successful convention held the previous October that inhibited their productivity.
