Martin Delany

Born of a free mother in Charles Town, West Virginia, raised in Pennsylvannia, opened a medical practice, became an abolitionist, Africa emigrationist and the 1st Black Field Officer in the Union Army in the 52nd U.S. Colored Troops. Briefly became a judge in Charleston, South Carolina, served in the Freedmen's Bureau and became an author. Sometimes referred to as the "Father of Black Nationalism."
