The June 1864 edition of The Atlantic newspaper features a personal piece, written by African American abolitionist and teacher, Charlotte Forten Grimké, about her experiences on St. Helena Island in the South Carolina Sea Islands. Themes includes: Forten's observations on Christmas Day and July 4th celebrations, stories told by formerly enslaved people about their old masters and their escape and Emancipation Day celebrations. Other themes include: Grimke's impressions of Colonel T.W. Higginson and General Rufus Saxton, her engagement with Black soldiers, the John Brown song, religious ceremonies, and the constant threat of attack from the Rebel army.
