The May 1864 edition of The Atlantic newspaper features Charlotte Forten Grimlé's observations of life in the South Carolina Sea Islands during the Port Royal Experiment. Grimké - a Northern African American teacher sent to teach the newly freed in the Islands - provides a detailed description of the Islands, military officers' treatment of freedmen, her new home and school, the condition of the freed people's community, and her impressions of General Rufus Saxton.
