Chronicling America features an 1865 New York Daily Tribune newspaper article, written by an unknown author, that provides an account of the atmosphere prior to approval of the 13th Amendment--which abolished slavery and involuntary servitude except in cases where it is used as punishment for a crime. The author describes "an air of confidence rising almost to exultation on the Union" while on the pro-slavery side there is a "sullen gloom."
