Chronicling America features an 1865 newspaper article, written by an unknown author, that provides an opinion piece from the Mobile Tribune in regards to the ratification of the 13th Amendment--which abolished slavery and involuntary servitude except in cases where it is used as punishment for a crime. The authors says in regards to Southern reception of the amendment, "This one, however, is beyond the reach of estoppel and the best way, therefore, to save ourselves trouble is to accept it as a necessity which cannot be resisted."
