Description
The Library of Congress features an 1865 historical speech, given by T. B. Van Buren in the New York House of Assembly, in favor of the 13th Amendment--which abolished slavery and involuntary servitude except in cases where it is used as punishment for a crime--and the abolition of slavery. He says in regard to slavery, "we find it without excuse, a burning disgrace upon our reputation as a nation, and a moral curse in all its relations."
