History Matters presents an 1870 historical illustration, drawn by Joseph Keppler and featured in Die Vehme, that depicts white women being held back from the ballot box by a white, male individual while men of various races are being ushered forward to cast their votes, as allowed by the 15th Amendment--which prohibits the denial of suffrage to any United States citizens based off of race--by another white, male individual. Framing the illustration are various vignettes of white women working in professional capacities, such as an editor and an artist.
