NYPL Digital Collections presents an 1870 historical illustration that depicts an African American man dressed in a long coat casting a ballot after the enactment of the 15th Amendment--which prohibits the denial of suffrage to any United States citizens based off of race. The gentleman is surrounded by flies labeled with the states that did not support the amendment and the caption says, "Shoo Fly, Don't Bodder Me!"
