The Smithsonian Magazine features a 2017 article, written by Brigit Katz, that provides an account of the return of the remains of three Native American boys (Little Chief, Horse, and Little Plume) to the Arapaho tribe. Themes include: a thorough discussion of Native American assimilation, the role that Spotted Tail played as the first Native American chief to send children to the Carlisle Indian Industrial School. Other themes include: disease that ran rampant throughout the barracks at the school leading to the deaths of many Native American children.
