The Atlantic features a 2020 article, written by Matthew Fletcher and Tamera Begay, that provides an account of the prosecution of a Navajo man, Lezmond Mitchell, who was tried and convicted on two counts of murder and sentenced to death by the United States. Themes include: the first murder case of Spotted Tail, which led to the passing of the Major Crimes Act that allows the United States to prosecute "Indian-on-Indian" crimes, the Major Crimes Act that protects Native Americans from the death penalty, and the execution of Native Americans by the United States government.
