The Library of Congress presents a 1871 historical illustration, by C. Rogan, that centers President Grant signing the 15th Amendment. In the drawing, Grant is seated at a table, with a portrait of John Brown in the background, surrounded by a group of multiracial political figures. Political figures include: Robert Smalls, Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant, Charles Sumner, Hiram Rhodes Revels and Frederick Douglass among others. The illustration also includes illustrated vignettes of African Americans voting, serving in the U.S. army, farming and serving in government.
