The University of South Carolina Library presents an August 23, 1862 article, writer unknown, from the New South newspaper that provides a perspective on three Civil War experiments off the coast of South Carolina- Admiral Samuel Dupont's strategic naval success in Port Royal, General William Sherman's attempt to get South Carolina to rejoin the Union and General David Hunter's newly initiated experiment of training the first Black regiment to fight for the Union Army. According to the article, the newspaper had only been in circulation in South Carolina five months.
