Description
Blue Ridge Public Radio presents a podcast that was published on July 16, 2020, in which host Anita Rao talks to Robert Thomas, Asheville's Racial Justice Coalition Community Liaison, about the decision made in the city of Ashville, North Carolina, to provide reparations to its Black residents. The two discuss the unanimous vote of the Ashville City Council to provide reparations to its African American residents for the city’s role in slavery, discrimination, and community disinvestment. The title of the podcast ("What Might 40 Acres And A Mule Look Like In 2020 Asheville?") and the significance of reparations are considered in light of the phrase, "Forty Acres and a Mule," which was part of Union General William Tecumseh Sherman’s Special Field Order No. 15 that was issued on January 16, 1865, to allot land and leftover Army mules to formerly enslaved African American families, but was never fulfilled.
