HathiTrust presents this historical letter, sent by Union General David Hunter to President Abraham Lincoln on May 22, 1863, requesting that President Lincoln allow him to cease working with the Admiral Samuel F. Du Pont and the U.S. Navy. General Hunter lists a number of his grievances with Du Pont, requests the authority to recruit Black troops and give commissions to their officers.
