HathiTrust presents this historical letter written by President Abraham Lincoln to Union General David Hunter on June 30th, 1863 is President Lincoln’s response to General Hunters request to publish official military documents despite the Union Army regulation forbidding such action. Lincoln states that he cannot agree to the publication of documents whose details he does not know. Lincoln states that General Hunter’s actions on the matter must be left up to his own discretion.
