The Library of Congress presents a 1941 historical interview, conducted by John Henry Faulk with Harriet Smith--a formerly enslaved individual from Hempstead, Texas, that provides an enslaved perspective in regards to the activities surrounding the emancipation of the enslaved in Texas after General Gordon Granger delivered General Order No. 3 on June 19, 1865, which became known as "Juneteenth"--also known as Freedom Day or Jubilee Day, celebrates and commemorates the emancipation of enslaved individuals in the United States. Smith gives a detailed account of what her and her family did after they were freed and what it was like for them during this time.
