The National Humanities Center presents an 1856 historical speech, given by Charles Sumner (LR-MA)--the leader of the anti-slavery forces in Massachusetts and the Radical Republicans in the United States Senate--to the United States Senate, in which Sumner addresses the issue of slavery being "forced" on the Kansas territory by the Nebraska Bill. Sumner says, "The reptile monster [i.e. slavery], that could not be quietly and securely hatched there, was to
be pushed full-grown into the Territory."
