The Library of Congress presents a 1936-1938 full-length, black and white photograph that depicts Felix Haywood--a formerly enslaved individual from San Antonio, Texas--standing with his cane and his hand on his hip in front of a porch. Haywood was freed from slavery by General Order No. 3 that was delivered to Galveston, Texas, by General Gordon Granger on June 19, 1865, which became known as "Juneteenth"--also known as Freedom Day or Jubilee Day, celebrates and commemorates the emancipation of enslaved individuals in the United States.
