The Library of Congress presents a 1937 historical narrative, collected by the Federal Writers' Project: Slave Narrative Project, of Felix Haywood--a formerly enslaved individual from San Antonio, Texas. Haywood provides a description of his life as an enslaved man as well as what it was like in Texas after General Order No. 3 was delivered to Galveston, Texas, by General Gordon Granger on June 19, 1865, which became known as "Juneteenth"--also known as Freedom Day or Jubilee Day, celebrates and commemorates the emancipation of enslaved individuals in the United States.
