Chronicling America features an 1865 Wyandot Pioneer newspaper article, written by an unknown author, that provides an account of the support received by President Andrew Johnson (D-TN)--the 17th President of the United States from 1865 to 1869--after took over as president after President Abraham Lincoln's assassination. According to the account, "no man, North or South, has been more bitter in his denunciation of rebellion and rebels, and of no man can the leading conspirators expect less favor." Also included in the article is a portion of Johnson's speech given in Washington, D.C., after the fall of Richmond, Virginia.
