Smithsonian Magazine features a 2017 article, written by Lorraine Boissoneault, that provides a discussion of how an 1866 political cartoon, drawn by Thomas Nast, accurately depicts the political battles fought over Reconstruction policy. According to the article, Nast depicted the struggles Congress endured with President Andrew Johnson through his symbolism in depicting Johnson as a jester who is talking to an injured African American soldier.
