DocsTeach presents an 1865 historical oath, taken by James Hicks, that declares his allegiance to the Union after the Civil War. In the oath, Hicks vows to "abide by and faithfully support all laws and proclamations which have been made during the existing rebellion, with reference to the emancipation of slaves." The oath was witnessed and signed by William H. Barry to ensure its validity.
