The National Archives Catalog presents an 1868 historical speech, given by the United States Senate Committee, that provides a discussion of the powers held by the president after the impeachment of President Andrew Johnson (D-TN)--who became the 17th President of the United States after President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in April of 1865--and suggests that the solution to the abuse of presidential power lies in the abolition of the presidency.
