Description
Note: 1st column, top.
Chronicling America features an 1866 Lancaster Ledger newspaper article, written by NEMO, that provides a poem about the treatment of the South by President Andrew Johnson (D-TN)--who became the 17th President of the United States after President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in April of 1865. The poem says, "The South's for Union--if they'd let her back, She'd prove loyal by each and every act, but its more than they ought ever require, To love those who wantonly her homes did fire. Huzzah for Johnson and his matchless tact! She'll be loyal--if he'll only get her back."
