Chronicling America provides an article, writer unknown, from the August 23, 1862 edition of The Southern Aegis and Harford County Intelligencer on the care of emancipated African Americans in the South Carolina Sea Islands. According to the article, some African Americans were "put under the care of" the Gideonites - a group of Northern abolitionist missionaries and teachers- and, according to the writer, this support was also a "heavy tax" for both the Union Army and the United States Treasury.
