Chronicling America features a January 28, 1863 article from the the Cadiz Democratic Sentinel newspaper that publishes a letter critiquing of the Gideonites- a group of Northern abolitionist missionaries and teachers - provided by an unnamed Union soldier. Themes included: the costs to fund the missionaries' salaries and activities, allegations of misappropriation of funds, the negative impact of their work on the newly freed and the soldier's assertion that he is "not fighting for the freedom of the negro, but for the maintenance of the laws of the Constitution of the United States."
