Webster offers a brief account of the conflict that arose in South Carolina between the Union soldiers, cotton agents, and the newly arrived Gideonites- a group of Northern abolitionist teachers and missionaries - in 1862. The source includes commentary a Boston abolitionist, Edward L. Pierce, that appeared in the Atlantic Monthly, and an extract from a letter written by businessman and abolitionist, John Murray Forbes, to Senator Charles Sumner on the matter.
