The letter features correspondence from Northern missionaries and teachers known as Gideonites who were sent to work in the South Carolina Sea Islands during the Civil War and Reconstruction. Most letters focus on the missionaries' impressions of local freedmen, their missionary work and experiences in the Sea Islands.
