Internet Archive provides an article written by James M. McPherson that was included in the book, "Reconstruction: An Anthology of Revisionist Writings" (1969). McPherson's study of the antislavery movement offers an analysis on how abolitionists confronted some of the primary issues of Reconstruction and sought to influence the Republican program for the South. Discussion of the Gideonites, a group of Northern abolitionist missionaries, is integrated throughout the article. On pages 146-147, McPherson provides his interpretation of conflict and controversies surrounding the Gideonites.
