Hartshorn in 1910 that briefly discusses education at Penn School- one of the country's first schools for formerly enslaved African Americans established on St. Helena Island in Beaufort County, South Carolina. The article offers an account of the type of coursework and training offered at the school, an explanation of "community work," and the emphasis on farm work at the school. Several historical photos including young students and their teachers are included.
