The New York Times presents an April 4, 2008 article, by Shaila Dewan, that provides an account of Dr. Martin Luther King's time spent at Penn Center, formerly Penn School- one of the country's first schools for formerly enslaved African Americans established on St. Helena Island in Beaufort County, South Carolina. A brief account of King's experiences at Penn in 1966 include the use of the center as a retreat for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, as well as a place of relaxation. Quotes and pictures from local community members who met and talked with King are also featured in the article.
