The Library of Congress features an 1845 historical illustration, drawn by Ephraim W. Bouve and published by Henry Prentiss, depicts Frederick Douglass--a formerly enslaved African American, who became known for his prominent role in the abolitionist movement as well as for his speeches and writing against the institution of slavery--in front of a bush on the cover of sheet music dressed in a stripped shirt with white pants and bare feet pointing towards the right portion of illustration and carrying a stick with a cloth bag. In the background, two mounted horses and dogs are pictured.
