The Library of Congress features an 1877 historical illustration, featured in Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, that depicts Frederick Douglass--a formerly enslaved African American, who became known for his prominent role in the abolitionist movement as well as for his speeches and writing against the institution of slavery--in an office, dressed in a suit, and shaking hands with an African American man who is flanked by three other African American men. Behind them, a white man sits reading a paper with his legs crossed.
