Description
The National Archives provides an undated historical map that shows Mitchelville, one of the first self-governing communities of formerly enslaved African Americans, located on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. The name of the town is written on the map, in addition to various landmarks and descriptors in the surrounding area, such as plantations, forests, corrals, agricultural fields, and arable land.
