The History Workshop provides a comprehensive lesson plan that helps students understand the Union occupation of Hilton Head Island (SC) and the establishment of Mitchelville - one of the first self-governing Black communities - there on the island. The lesson plan includes background contextual information, both primary and secondary sources, a historical timeline, text analysis activities, learning standards, and additional reading resources.
