The University of North Florida features a collection of historical letters from Dr. Seth Rogers, a White abolitionist surgeon who worked with the First South Carolina Colored Regiment (one of the first African American Union Army troops) at Camp Saxton on Port Royal Island in Beaufort, South Carolina. In his February 20, 1863 letter, Rogers recounts his visit to nearby St. Helena Island to see Ellen Murray- a White missionary teacher from Rhode Island- and other missionary teachers at Penn school (one of the first schools for newly freed African Americans). Themes include: Rogers' perspective on freed children's capacity for learning and his opinions regarding the impact of slavery on their mental development.
