HathiTrust features an April 7, 1866 letter written by Ellen Murray, a White missionary teacher, and co-founder of Penn School- one of the first schools for newly freed African Americans on St. Helena Island in Beaufort, South Carolina. The letter appears in the May 1866 edition of The Pennsylvania Freedmen's Bulletin (p. 1-2). In her letter, Murray provides observations on student attendance and punctuality, new students recently returned from the army, and illnesses among students.
