Chronicling America features an 1865 Evening Star newspaper article, written by an unknown author, that provides an account of the inaugural address given by President Andrew Johnson (D-TN)--who became the 17th President of the United States after President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in April of 1865. According to the account, "all were deeply impressed with the solemnity of the occasion, and the recent sad occurrence that caused the necessity for the speedy inauguration of the President, was gravely discussed."
