Chronicling America provides a March 2, 1893 article, writer unknown, from The National Tribune promoting, "First Days Amongst the Contrabands," a memoir written by Elizabeth Hyde Botume- a White missionary teacher who was sent to teach newly freed people in the South Carolina Sea Islands during the Port Royal Experiment. The writer provides a critique of newly freed people's behavior based on his/her interpretation of the memoir, which according to the writer contributes "minute and faithful studies of the negros."
