The National Archives presents the November 8, 1969 National Register of Historic Places Nomination form for the city of Beaufort, South Carolina. According to the source, the city was officially certified on December 12, 1969. The "Statement of Significance" section of the form includes excerpts from the memoir of Elizabeth Hyde Botume- a White missionary teacher who was sent to teach newly freed people in the South Carolina Sea Islands during the Port Royal Experiment. Of note, the form lists Botume's commentary about her stay at the Heyward House, General Rufus Saxton's efforts to bring order to Beaufort, where formerly enslaved African American refugees had gathered, and her time at Old Fort Plantation.
