The Library of Congress features an 1866 historical speech, given by Bayley Wyat, that provides a freedman's perspective of how the lives of African Americans changed once they were emancipated from slavery and how the Freedmen's Bureau's--which was created by the Freedmen's Bureau Act and provided aid to free African Americans and displaced Southerners after the Civil War--role in providing relief for those individuals.
