Chronicling America features an 1866 Alexandria Gazette, written by an unknown author, that provides an opinion against Senator Charles Sumner (LR-MA)--the leader of the anti-slavery forces in Massachusetts and the Radical Republicans in the United States Senate--and his views on slavery. According to the account, "The savage intensity of Cato's hatred of Carthage was even surpassed by Sumner's rage against slavery. The whole Southern people had, in his distempered imagination, become his foe, and the fiercest, deadliest passions of his were kindled against the South from that very hour."
