Internet Archive features a diary dated January 8, 1865 from St. Helensville, South Carolina, in which Laura Matilda Towne - a White missionary teacher from Massachusetts - mentions Harriet Ware- another White missionary who was also sent to the South Carolina Sea Islands to teach newly freed people during the Civil War. Towne discusses the significance of a bell that Ware purchased and the need for her own bell.
