The University of North Florida features a February 5, 1863 letter, written by Seth Rogers - a White surgeon for the 1st South Carolina Volunteer Infantry Regiment of the Union Army - in which he provides a description of Prince Rivers. Rivers was a formerly enslaved man from Beaufort, South Carolina, who served as a Union Army Sergeant in the 1st South Carolina Volunteers. Among Rogers' characterizations of Rivers, he noted that "he is agile and fleet, like a deer, in his speed and like a panther in his tread," and that "his manners are not surpassed on this globe." Rogers also offered a description of Rivers' appearance.
