The University of North Florida features a May 27, 1863 letter, written by Seth Rogers - a White surgeon for the 1st South Carolina Volunteer (Colored) - in which he mentions Prince Rivers. Rivers was a formerly enslaved man from Beaufort, South Carolina, who served as a Union Army Sergeant in the 1st South Carolina Volunteers. Rogers referenced Rivers and Robert Sutton's discussion about soldiers seeking discharge due to a disability.
