Internet Archive provides a historical letter that was published in the edited collection, Letters from Port Royal Written at the Time of the Civil War, by Harriet Ware- a White missionary who came to the South to teach formerly enslaved people on Port Royal Island in South Carolina during the Civil War. The letter features Ware's account of ceremonies celebrating the Emancipation Proclamation in the Sea Islands. Ware specifically recorded an encounter between Colonel Thomas Wentworth Higginson and Prince Rivers - a formerly enslaved man turned Union Army Sergeant for the 1st South Carolina (Colored) Volunteers. The letter describes a scene where Rivers received the American flag and pledged to keep it safe.
