The National Trust for Historic Preservation features an August 11, 2016 article, by Bill Fitzpatrick, on a brief history of the Penn Center and the Port Royal Experiment in the South Carolina Sea Islands. Of note, the writer acknowledges Hastings Gantt - a formerly enslaved man turned businessman and landowner from Beaufort, South Carolina - who donated the land for the establishment of the Penn School 1864.
