Biography

The South Carolina Encyclopedia features a 2016 article, by Marquetta L. Goodwine, on the Penn Center- one of the country's first schools for newly freed people on St. Helena Island in Beaufort County, South Carolina. Of note, the article refers to Hastings Gantt - a formerly enslaved man turned businessman and landowner from Beaufort, South Carolina - who sold a fifty-acre tract of his land for the permanent establishment of the Penn School.
